September 4, 2008 Part 2

From here we went and ate lunch at a Greek Pizza place ( delicious) and took the bus to the home of Henry W. Longfellow three miles away. It was still quite a walk from the bus to his house. The bus drove down very narrow streets in a residential neighborhood and wasn't too concerned about kids or other cars. This home is also noted for fame for the fact that George Washington lived in it for 9 months before the war. It is a beautiful huge house like most of the homes here seem to be. (picture) We were getting short on time to catch our next National Park today, so we didn't do the house tour here. We walked from here to the subway and rode it and hour to the National Parks Home of Presidents John Adams and John Quincey Adams. They have a separate cottage built as a library for all their books. It is a beautiful place with so many book, I can't imagine anyone reading and using so many books. No pictures were allowed because several years ago the library was burglarized and several very valuable books were taken because the robbers had photographed where the book they wanted were and the came back with a chain saw and cut the door down and entered and stole the books before the police could get there. They eventually did get the books back, and the thieves were sent to prison. Next we went into the home of the Adams family, it was kept quite dark to protect it from light. The wallpaper is still the original paper as is the furniture and furnishings. Again no pictures were allowed. Many generations of Adams families lived here before it was turned over to the National Parks System.
