Monday 6~~~~ Today we drove to Savannah, Georgia, when we finished setting up camp, we drove around town a little, as Kent always likes to see where we are. We drove to the sea shore and we walked out on the long pier and stopped and visited with the different fisherman fishing there. The wind was really blowing, but it was warm. There were some young men with their surf boards trying to catch the perfect wave, and several young kids playing in the surf. The beach goes out a long ways here before it drops off, so it is safer for kids to play in, unlike our beach. The water is also a whole lot warmer here. We also drove out to Fort Pulaski National Park. It has a moat, this wet ditch that completely surrounds the fort is 7 feet deep and from 32 to 48 feet wide. The water was brought through a canal from the Savannah River and was controlled by tide gates. There is a draw bridge to make entry difficult. This was a great fort used during the Civil War by the Confederates. It is too long a story to explain, but the pictures we took of the walls shot at by the Union cannons. Some of the 5275 cannon shots can still be seen in the walls. You can see in one picture the mortar they used for the bricks is full of SEASHELLS. A lot of the old buildings here in the South have those seashells in the sand and mortar. The Fort is very large and well taken care of by the parks system.
